Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

Working with the Network Traffic Analysis Team, you will join a team of highly experienced engineers and analysts developing the next generation of network security detection capabilities for our VMware products. We are the team responsible for the development of techniques to identify anomalies and suspicious activities in network traffic. We analyze large volumes of network data using machine learning, behavioral modelling, and heuristics; pinpoint interesting activities that are relevant for security operators; and make it all work at scale across our customer base. You will be directly involved in the development of these detection techniques, and in their integration in a number of products. You will work with a team that has deep expertise in network security and roots in academic research.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Within 30 days of employment, understand the role and the high-level operation of the main components involved in the anomaly detection framework. Become proficient with working with the python code base and the docker-based test environment.

  • Within 90 days of employment, extend the framework we that implements our anomaly detection capability (e.g., to support a new input type or to generate alerts compatible with one of our new products), oversee its deployment to production, and integration in a VMware product. This will involve extending the existing python codebase, implementing tests to ensure good coverage of the added code, and going through code reviews in Gerrit.

  • Within the first year of employment, you will become the owner of the anomaly detection framework. You will have a deep understanding of its operation and its interrelation with the system and be able to make architectural and design decisions on the best way to efficiently implement new feature requests.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Feature development: you are expected over time to become the primary owner of some of the components of our anomaly detection framework. This is the component that produce security alerts consumed by a number of VMware product. In this role, you will contribute to the development of new features on the framework, maintain existing code, and make it more efficient.

  • Threat detection: you are expected to have some degree of knowledge and interest in the anomaly detection techniques that are implemented in the framework. More specifically, you will be expected to have regular conversations with our network analysts in your same team and discuss about improvements to the framework to better support detecting new threats.

  • You will be expected to monitor the detection framework (deployed in k8s environments) and respond to any issue in its operation.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The team is run as closely as possible to a real research team. The structure of the team is flat, and everybody's opinions are always valued equally. We always attempt to leave as much as space as possible to personal growth and to support employees in learning specialized topics, such as ML and network security tools. The team combines software engineers and network analysts that together develop and maintain the tools used for network anomaly detection: this tight collaboration enables us to move quickly from an initial idea to deployment in production.

Where is this role located?

Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within a reasonable non-daily commute of the office.
